Bernard, 21, of New Portland, Maine, was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade in a Taliban ambush Aug. 14 in Helmand province of southern Afghanistan. Cpl. Bernard was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. Two other soldiers and three civilians were wounded.
A Marine and son of a Marine, a devout Christian, Iraq war veteran and avid hiker, homeschooled in rural Maine was a great inclusion to US Marine as sources say, and most importantly will be remembered thus in future.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Lance Cpl. family and friends. God Bless all of you!
